Dental Care Before a PCS Move: A Luke AFB Family’s Checklist
PCS season hits Luke AFB hard every summer. For military families relocating to or from Glendale, a dental checkup before the move is one of those things that’s easy to skip and surprisingly worth doing. Here’s a practical pre-PCS dental checklist from our Glendale practice — what to handle before you leave, what to schedule at your new duty station, and how to handle TRICARE Dental Program records during the transition.
Why pre-PCS dental matters
Three reasons dental care before a move is different from ordinary dental care:
Active duty dental readiness. Service members must maintain Dental Class 1 or 2 status for deployability. Untreated dental issues downgrade your readiness class. A Class 3 or 4 member can’t deploy, and in some cases can’t PCS until issues are resolved. Your sponsor’s dental care isn’t optional.
Continuity of care disruption. Moving to a new area means finding new dentists and re-establishing care patterns. Any ongoing treatment (orthodontics, implants in progress, root canals with follow-up crowns pending) creates problems if handed off mid-treatment to a new provider in an unfamiliar system.
Insurance navigation. TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) coverage continues during PCS, but finding in-network providers in new locations, transferring records, and coordinating any active treatment requires effort. Plan ahead rather than scramble after you arrive.
Pre-move dental checklist
Start at least 60 days before the PCS move. Ideally 90 days.
Active duty sponsor — 90-60 days out
- Verify current dental readiness classification at the 56th MDG Dental Clinic on Luke AFB
- Address any Class 3 or 4 issues immediately — these must be resolved before PCS
- Complete any in-progress dental treatment if possible (fillings, root canals, extractions)
- Request copies of dental records and X-rays to bring to your next assignment’s dental facility
- Get a full comprehensive exam and cleaning before leaving
Family members — 90-60 days out
- Full cleaning and comprehensive exam for every family member
- Complete any pending treatment (fillings, crowns in progress)
- Request records and X-rays for transfer to a new dentist
- Assess status of any pediatric orthodontic treatment
- Verify TDP enrollment is current and premiums are paid
30 days out
- Finalize treatment plans — address anything that can be completed before the move
- Review TDP provider directory for your new location to identify in-network dentists
- Schedule first dental appointment at new duty station for 30-45 days after arrival
- Obtain any prescription refills (fluoride toothpaste for high-risk patients, etc.) sufficient for the transition window
Moving day forward
- Carry dental records with you personally rather than relying on mail transfer
- Know the name and contact info of your new-location dentist in advance
- Maintain hygiene routines during the move — disruption often causes lapse
- For kids in orthodontic treatment, have appliances and retainers packed in your carry-on rather than shipped
Handling in-progress treatment
Orthodontics (braces or Invisalign). Most orthodontists will complete an in-progress case even after you’ve moved, if feasible — but it means flying back for appointments or a long drive, which isn’t practical for most moves. Alternative: transfer to a new orthodontist at the destination. Request full records (treatment plan, progress photos, current aligner series or archwire specifications). Transfer fees vary; original orthodontist typically doesn’t charge, new orthodontist’s fees for taking over vary.
Implants in progress. Bone healing typically takes 3-6 months between implant placement and restoration. If you’re between those stages during a PCS, one of two approaches: (1) complete the restoration at a local provider before you leave (if possible), or (2) transfer to a provider at your new location who can handle the restoration phase using records from the placing dentist.
Root canal with pending crown. The tooth is temporarily restored and should have its permanent crown within 30-90 days of the root canal completion. Don’t leave for a PCS move with a root canal awaiting its crown more than 60 days old. Complete the crown first.
Periodontal maintenance. Patients on 3-4 month periodontal maintenance schedules should schedule their final maintenance visit just before moving and their first at the new location right on schedule — don’t skip a cycle.
TRICARE Dental Program and the transition
TDP coverage continues during PCS moves without interruption. Premiums continue to be deducted from pay. Your TDP enrollment ID stays the same.
Finding a new in-network TDP provider at your next duty station:
- Use United Concordia’s provider search tool at uccitdp.com
- Call United Concordia member services: 1-866-984-2337
- Ask at your new base’s MDG dental clinic for recommendations on local in-network providers
- Check local military spouse groups and base family support channels for provider recommendations
Out-of-network providers can still see you, but you’ll pay more and submit claims for reduced reimbursement. In-network is almost always the better financial choice.
For Glendale families moving away from Luke AFB
If you’ve been patients at Glisten Dental Glendale and are PCSing elsewhere, request records 4-6 weeks before your move. We provide:
- Complete clinical records
- Current and prior radiographs (digital format, easy to transfer to new provider)
- Treatment plans for any pending work
- Notes on specific considerations (medications, anxiety, sedation history)
- Pediatric orthodontic records if applicable
Records request: call 480-630-4446, request records in writing (email sufficient), allow 7-14 days for transfer. Patient signature typically required per HIPAA.
For families moving to Luke AFB
Welcome to Glendale. For initial establishment of care:
- Bring prior dental records if you have them
- Schedule comprehensive exams for all family members within 30-45 days of arrival
- Verify TDP status is active at new location
- For active duty sponsors, establish care at the 56th MDG Dental Clinic
- For family members with active orthodontic treatment, transfer to local provider (we coordinate if you choose Glisten Dental Glendale)
We see Luke AFB family members regularly. Call 480-630-4446 to schedule initial visits. Please confirm our current TDP network status when booking — enrollment evolves over time and we want to give you accurate information about your out-of-pocket costs.
For detailed TDP benefits information, see our TRICARE Dental Program guide.
Common pre-PCS dental mistakes
Skipping cleanings in the final months. “We’re moving anyway, we’ll just do it at the new place” — except the new-place establishment often takes 60-90 days, and untreated problems progress during that time.
Leaving with active tooth pain. Something that could have been addressed easily at a known provider turns into an emergency at an unfamiliar location during a stressful move.
Not transferring records. New providers starting from scratch means repeating X-rays unnecessarily (cost and radiation exposure), losing history of previous issues and past treatment, inefficient care.
Not coordinating orthodontics early. Mid-treatment orthodontic transfers add 2-3 months to total treatment time and frequently cost extra. Plan ahead.
Not screening for OSA during major life transitions. Sleep and stress change during PCS. Pre-existing OSA gets worse during stressful transitions. If you or your sponsor have OSA risk factors, a screening conversation is worth the time.
The checklist, one page
- 90-60 days out: comprehensive exams for every family member, address Class 3/4 issues, complete pending treatment if possible
- 60-30 days out: finalize remaining treatment, request records, identify new-location dentist
- 30 days out: confirm records transfer, schedule first post-arrival appointment
- Move week: carry records personally, pack orthodontic appliances/retainers, maintain hygiene routine
- Arrival: establish care within 30-45 days, verify TDP network, coordinate any active treatment
PCS is stressful enough without dental surprises. Call 480-630-4446 to schedule pre-PCS dental care at Glisten Dental Glendale — we’ve walked plenty of Luke AFB families through this sequence and know how to make it smooth.
